5 Tips For Making A Vignette
A wonderful way to add interest and color to a room is to create a vignette. A vignette is a group of objects styled together on a table top, bookshelf, or coffee table.
Many times, a homeowner will simply line up things on a shelf. Like the example below. This doesn't create any harmony or interest in a room.
I am going to take the same table top shown in the photo above and create several vignettes to show you different ways you can style your vignettes. I will give you some tips as we go.
Tip #1: Group your objects in odd numbers. Odd numbers give stronger visual interest than even numbers. In the photo above, you can see 3 candlesticks and the lamp/clock/small frame are also a grouping of 3.
Tip #2: Vary the height of the objects you group together. Use beautiful boxes, small pedestals, or stacks of books to create a platform for smaller objects.
Tip #3: Create depth. You don't want everything lined up like it is ready for a garage sale! Have larger things in the back with smaller pieces showcased in front. It also helps "ground" your grouping with a statement piece or a larger object in the back. Think about creating layers.
Tip #4: Bring together a variety of objects that are all in the same color family or that have a common theme. The photo above shows a bar vignette that could be used during a party or left out all of the time in a dining room. It is tied together with the bar theme.
Tip #5: Don't worry about symmetry. That can look too formal and "done". Relax and have fun with vignettes. Group together your favorite items and - after following the tips above - you'll have a vignette that you love!
Bonus Tip: I wanted to also show an easy way to decorate your vignettes for holidays. Since we are a few weeks away from Halloween, I took one of the vignettes I made and decorated it for Halloween. You can simply add in decorative holiday pieces and your vignette will be ready. And don't worry about holidays having certain color themes. You can do whatever you like. Orange is not my favorite color, so my Halloween decorations here are gold! Be creative and have fun and, most importantly, make it reflect YOU!
