Styling An End Table

Styling an end table seems to be something I get asked about quite a bit. There really is a simple formula to make your end table beautiful and functional. Below are some tips to help you get started.

Here is an end table I will style a few ways to show you how to style your own end table. Just a side note on this table, I found it at a thrift shop for $14. It was dark wood and beat up, but had great bones and was a good brand. After a fresh coat of paint, it has a new life. You can usually transform anything, so don't pass up those good finds.

Onto styling this table. First, start with your lamp (or another tall object if you aren't using a lamp). Make sure you have the correct size lamp for your table. Remember, your lamp is art too. Pick something you love - not just something that is functional.

Your lamp is your highest point. Your goal now is to add layers. You want to vary the height of things on your table to create interest. So, next I will add a "medium" height:

For this mid-layer, I love to use books or boxes to create a new surface for a smaller piece of art, frame and accessory. They not only create a new surface, but they add color and texture. Lastly, put on your lowest layer:

Here I added a small frame. I am leaving enough room to put a mug down or other items that help make your end table functional for you. Ok, let's look at another example:

Here is another lamp, another mid-layer, and then a small object. Different layers and varying heights will make your table seem fuller. Look for things that are interesting. Look for texture, color, different surfaces (some shiny, some textured,...). The differences are what will make it look interesting.

Since the holidays are coming up, I also styled the table one last way: like a bar cart! If you don't have a bar cart, but will have company over during the holidays, an end table is perfect for setting up a small bar cart where everyone can help themselves.

Have fun making your end tables interesting and personalized. Remember varying heights, different layers, and several textures. Add in family photos, art, and mementos, and you will have a stylish and functional end table.
